US shoots down Iranian drone near aircraft carrier: show of force and new pressure on Tehran – Rezazade
The US military has shot down an Iranian drone that approached the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Arabian Sea. According to the Pentagon, the drone “acted aggressively” and ignored de-escalation measures from the US, after which it was destroyed by an F-35C fighter. The incident occurred approximately 500 miles off the southern coast of Iran.
According to the US Central Command, the drone was a Shahed-139 type — one of the modifications of Iranian kamikaze attack drones used for reconnaissance and sabotage operations. The American side states that the device approached the aircraft carrier group with “unclear intentions”, creating a potential security threat.
International expert and first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, believes that this episode is not just a tactical incident, but part of a broader strategy of confrontation between the United States and Iran.
“Iran is deliberately testing the limits of what is permissible, bringing its drones closer to key American military facilities. This is a classic strategy of hybrid pressure - provocations without a direct declaration of conflict,” Rezazade notes.
According to him, the US reaction was indicative and deliberately harsh. “The destruction of the F-35 drone is a signal not only to Tehran, but also to all regional players: Washington is ready to use force without warning if it sees a threat to its strategic assets,” the expert emphasizes.
Rezazade also draws attention to the broader context. Over the past month, the US has significantly increased its military presence in the region, deploying dozens of aircraft and about a dozen warships. This, according to Donald Trump, is part of a pressure campaign on Iran to force it to agree to a new nuclear deal.
“We are observing a classic model of coercion through force. Iran demonstrates drones - the US responds with aircraft carriers. This is a dangerous spiral in which any mistake can escalate into a direct military clash,” Rezazade notes.
In his opinion, the Shahed-139 incident shows that the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea are gradually turning into a zone of constant military friction. “In fact, we are talking about a new form of Cold War in the Middle East, where drones have replaced missiles, and aircraft carriers have replaced diplomacy,” the expert summarizes.
