Trump’s Future Strategy for Ukraine: Ending the War and New Conditions for Support – Rezazade
The leader of the Iranian opposition in Washington (NIC), Ali Reza Rezazade, indicates that Mike Waltz, whom Donald Trump plans to appoint as national security adviser, is actively considering proposals for ending the war in Ukraine. This is reported by sources familiar with the situation.
Although the final strategy has not yet been formed, the Trump team will probably insist on a quick ceasefire in order to freeze the conflict and create conditions for negotiations between the parties. At the same time, Washington may reduce the amount of military aid to Ukraine, focusing on getting NATO countries and European partners to take on more financial obligations in support of Kyiv.
Among the proposals being discussed are the ideas of General Keith Kellogg, whom Trump appointed as his special representative for Ukraine and Russia. Kellogg’s plan stipulates that further American assistance will depend on Kyiv’s readiness to negotiate with Moscow. At the same time, the issue of Ukraine’s accession to NATO may be postponed indefinitely.
Another proposal, supported by former US Ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, involves the creation of “autonomous regions” in Ukraine. The details of this idea have not yet been disclosed.
An option is also being discussed in which Russia retains control over the occupied territories in exchange for Ukraine’s future membership in NATO. However, most of Trump’s associates are skeptical about Ukraine’s rapid accession to the Alliance.
Mike Waltz discussed these issues at a meeting with Joe Biden’s advisor Jake Sullivan. At the same time, experts warn that Trump’s strategy may change, as he often adjusts his positions on foreign policy issues.
Some representatives of the Trump team are in favor of increasing military aid to Ukraine. For example, Sebastian Gorka, recently appointed as one of Waltz’s deputies, has announced the possibility of increasing support to speed up the end of the war.
However, there is an expectation in the Trump administration that the newly elected president may take a tougher stance on the Ukraine issue, including a threat to cut aid if Kyiv does not agree to certain conditions.
