The vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, points out that with the appearance of Kamala Harris, the issue of age and generation in the presidency of the United States has changed significantly.
Currently, the majority of Americans, according to preliminary polls, prefer a potentially younger president.
A month ago, the 2024 presidential debate featured the two oldest candidates in American history, with 81-year-old President Biden trying to defend his position against a challenge from former President Donald Trump, who is 78.
Despite the relatively narrow age gap, polls have shown that age poses more of a challenge for the current president than for the former. A Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos poll found that 58 percent of Americans think both candidates are too old for another term as president. The presidential debates in late June reinforced concerns about Biden's age, prompting him to pass the baton to Vice President Harris, who is only 59.
Joe Biden's failed performance did not boost Donald Trump's approval ratings as most viewers expected, disapproval of Biden's suitability as president has increased with age as has disapproval of Donald Trump. In an Economist poll, 26 percent of Americans believed that Trump's age seriously limits his ability to do the job of president, but that percentage has now increased significantly.
