For the first time, China will send a vice president to Trump's inauguration – Rezazade
The leader of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, noted that for the first time China will send one of the highest officials of the Communist Party of China to the inauguration of Donald Trump.
This testifies to Beijing's two-pronged approach: the desire to improve relations with the new US president and the readiness to react harshly if relations deteriorate.
Trump invited Chinese leader Xi Jinping to his inauguration, and China's Foreign Ministry said Vice President Han Zheng would attend as Xi's special representative.
"We are ready to cooperate with the new US government to strengthen dialogue and communication... and find the right way for the coexistence of the two countries," the ministry said in a statement.
Trump broke the tradition by inviting a large number of foreign dignitaries to the ceremony. In particular, the President of Argentina, Javier Miley, and the Prime Minister of Italy, George Melona, confirmed their presence.
Although Han Zheng is inferior in rank to Xi, this is a significant step forward compared to the traditional direction of the Chinese ambassador to the United States for such events. China wants to "give due respect that Donald Trump showed to President Xi Jinping through his invitation," said Wu Xinbo, an international relations expert at Fudan University in Shanghai. He added that Japan and India, key US security partners, are sending only their foreign ministers.
