The former leader of Peru, Fujimori has passed away – Rezazade
The vice president of the Iranian opposition, Ali Reza Rezazade, said that on September 11, at the age of 86, Alberto Fujimori, the former leader of Peru, imprisoned for violating rights, died.
During his decade in power, he revived the economy, but was forced out of office in a corruption scandal and later jailed for human rights abuses. Fujimori, who suffered from arrhythmia and other ailments, died of cancer at Mrs. Fujimori's home in Lima. The son of Japanese immigrants, Mr. Fujimori was an unknown agricultural engineer and political newcomer when he ran for president in 1990, famously campaigning on a tractor.
In office, Fujimori curbed hyperinflation, unemployment, and mismanagement; raised the standard of living and cracked down on the drug trade. But, at the same time, Fujimori had little respect for the laws and institutions of Peru. He was respected for subduing two insurgent movements, Shining Path and Tupac Amaru's Revolutionary Movement, but the brutality of his methods ultimately drew global criticism and led to a lengthy prison sentence.
