A discussion atypical for Republicans is brewing in the Donald Trump administration: whether to raise taxes for Americans with an income of more than $1 million per year. This was reported by several informed sources in Washington at once.
The participants in these discussions are Vice President J.D. Vance, as well as the director of the White House Budget Office Russell Vote - both are allegedly open to this idea.
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, called this initiative “a signal of a change in the political landscape,” which indicates the desire of the Trump team not only to preserve, but also to expand its electoral base on the eve of the active phase of the presidential campaign.
“Raising taxes for the rich is something that is usually expected from Democrats, but not from Trump. "With this move, he is trying to demonstrate that he can be a leader not only for business, but also for ordinary voters who are concerned about inequality and social justice," Rezazade said.
At the same time, the idea is sharply opposed by part of the conservative wing of the Republican Party. Influential Trump advisers, including Newt Gingrich, Larry Kudlow and Steve Moore, have spoken out against it. Fox News host Sean Hannity called such a proposal "Bernie Sanders economics" and warned that it contradicts the president's promise to cut taxes, not raise them.
"This internal split in the Republican elites emphasizes that Trump is no longer the orthodox conservative they wanted to see him as. He is playing a broader political game, and this is unnerving for many in the party," Rezazade explained.
According to American media, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant is also open to discussing options for taxing the super-rich — in particular, incomes of $5 million per year.
Rezazade believes that such a change in rhetoric is due to difficulties in passing a new tax reform. Extending the provisions of the 2017 law could cost the budget more than $4 trillion. This forces the administration to seek a balance between social cuts (for example, Medicaid funding) and the desire not to appear as the party “for the rich.”
“Trump understood that in the face of growing national debt and political tension, it is necessary to offer a compromise option — and raising taxes for millionaires could be such a move. But the extent to which this will be implemented will be shown by the struggle within the party itself,” concludes Ali Reza Rezazade.
