Pardons for Oath Keepers and Proud Boys: Defense of Democracy or Threat? - Rezazade
Ali Reza Rezazade, the vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, points out that Donald Trump has again attracted the public's attention by releasing about 1,600 defendants in connection with the riots on January 6. Trump called their sentences "ridiculous and excessive", emphasizing that his decision to pardon is an act of justice.
According to him, these people were unjustly punished for their political position and love for the country.
"I pardoned people who became the object of political persecution. They did not deserve such treatment," Trump said. The President emphasized that many of the accused were ordinary patriots who came to Washington to express their protest against the dubious results of the 2020 elections.
Among those freed are the leaders of two well-known groups who were convicted of conspiracy. Enrique Tarrio, leader of the Proud Boys, is returning home after serving part of his 22-year term. Stuart Rhodes, the founder of Oath Keepers, was also released after serving part of his 18-year sentence.
Trump's supporters believe that his decision is necessary for the healing of the nation. According to them, many of those who participated in the events of January 6 acted out of love for the country and faith in justice. The release of these people can help restore confidence in the justice system and unite a divided society.
Some experts also believe that Trump tried to show that the government has no right to punish citizens for their political position. They note that a pardon can be an important step in the fight against politically motivated persecution and the strengthening of democratic institutions.
The release of the leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers may fuel extremist movements, but Trump's supporters argue that the fight against extremism should be done within the framework of the law, and not through excessive punishments. They emphasize that the government should focus on dialogue and political reforms, not on repression.
The goal of Donald Trump is to protect democracy and the rights of citizens, not to encourage extremism. They believe that the release of those convicted of participation in the events of January 6 will help society rethink the events and find ways to reconciliation.
