Rubio unveils plan to overhaul and possibly eliminate USAID – Rezazadeh
Vice President of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, said the US Secretary of State had accused USAID of not serving the country’s interests.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced plans on Monday to reorganize and possibly eliminate the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The move is part of President Donald Trump’s push to reform the federal government and refocus funding on domestic needs.
In a letter to leading lawmakers from both parties, Rubio said USAID’s activities are “conflicting, duplicative and inconsistent with US foreign policy.” He also noted that the agency’s current systems and processes “often create divisions in US foreign policy and international relations.”
“In consultation with Congress, USAID could be reorganized, with individual missions, bureaus, and offices integrated into the State Department. The remainder of the agency could be eliminated in accordance with current law,” Rubio said.
At the same time, the secretary of state took direct control of USAID, appointing himself acting administrator of the agency. He also appointed a loyal Trump supporter, Peter W. Marocco, to lead the review and possible cuts. However, Rubio did not confirm rumors that USAID would be fully integrated into the State Department.
His report to Congress was the first official confirmation that Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, who leads an informal government initiative to reform the federal apparatus, are considering restructuring or eliminating the agency. Musk has repeatedly stated on social media that he intends to “destroy USAID,” calling it a “criminal organization.”
