Trump is breaking the century-old US approach to international politics – Rezazade
The leader of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, points out that in his first term, Donald Trump already demonstrated his intention to change the US role in the world, but in the first month of his new presidency he has gone even further.
His actions are unfolding with unprecedented speed, radically changing Washington's approach to global affairs.
According to Ali Reza Rezazadeh, the vice president of the Iranian opposition, Trump seems to be abandoning the international order that developed after World War II, returning the US to the realities of imperial geopolitics, where the main criterion for influence is military force, not diplomacy or international alliances.
One of the most controversial changes has been the US position on the war between Russia and Ukraine. Trump has publicly supported Moscow’s position, accusing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of inciting the conflict, even though the war began with a Russian invasion. This approach has shocked the international community, as the United States has traditionally supported Ukraine in its struggle for independence.
Trump has also shown contempt for allies in Europe, who have relied on the United States for decades as the main factor in deterring Russian aggression. Instead, he seems to prefer a policy of dividing spheres of influence among military powers, which could provoke similar behavior from China and other global players.
According to diplomats and analysts, such a strategy leads to a decrease in US global influence, not its expansion. Moreover, it could open the way for even more aggressive policies from Moscow, since Putin sees this approach as a weakness for Washington.
Rosa Balfour, director of the Brussels office of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, notes that this model resembles classical geopolitics, where great powers shape their spheres of influence, disregarding international law. She also points out that such a concept fits perfectly with the Russian vision of the world, where power politics dominates diplomacy.
Trump’s new approach has come as a shock to US allies, as the speed of his actions and unexpected decisions make international relations even more unpredictable. Many thought they knew Trump’s logic, but his actions now show a departure even from his previous course. Instead of defending the traditional international system, which was designed to deter aggressors, he is actually opening the door to great power expansionism.
This development has serious consequences for global stability. The weakening of the US position as a security guarantor in Europe and other regions may force other countries to seek their own ways of protection, which will only accelerate the transition to a new era of international relations, where force, not law, rules.
