Israeli military prosecutor charges five reservists with prisoner abuse – Rezazade
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazadeh, said that an Israeli military prosecutor on Wednesday charged five reservists with the abuse of a Palestinian prisoner. The incident occurred last year at the Sde Teyman military base, where thousands of Gazans are being held.
According to the indictment, the soldiers broke the prisoner’s ribs, punctured his left lung and damaged his rectum. His identity was not disclosed, only his initials were given.
Lawyers for one of the soldiers, Avi Amiram and Lior Porat, deny the charges. The Honenu legal group, which is defending the two defendants, has called the case unfair and claims that the prisoner was a fighter from an elite unit in northern Gaza. However, The New York Times was unable to independently verify this information. According to the indictment, on the evening of July 5, 2024, soldiers beat the prisoner as he screamed in pain. His hands and feet were tied and his eyes were blindfolded.
“For approximately 15 minutes, the defendants beat the prisoner, stomped on him and stood on his body. They inflicted blows all over his body,” the document says.
The military also used a stun gun, including to the head, and one of the soldiers hit him with a “sharp object,” causing his rectum to rupture. A few hours later, medics took the victim to a medical facility on the base, and the doctor ordered him to be urgently transported to the hospital.
