Mass layoffs at Pentagon: Specialist cuts expected – Rezazade
Vice-president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, says the Trump administration has ordered defense agencies to provide lists of their probationary employees by the end of Tuesday. Many are expected to be laid off as early as this week, according to five people familiar with the situation.
The move coincides with the arrival at the Pentagon of employees of the US DOGE service, owned by billionaire Elon Musk. Previously, this service managed the dismissal of thousands of employees at other federal agencies and coordinated the dissolution of the United States Agency for International Development.
It is not yet known whether some Defense Department employees will be exempt from the cuts. However, according to sources, many will be laid off. The Pentagon referred reporters’ questions to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which has played a key role in reforming the government during the first month of Trump’s presidency. Representatives from OPM and DOGE did not respond to requests for comment.
If the cuts were to be applied across the entire Pentagon, it could result in thousands of layoffs. The Department of Defense is the largest federal agency in the United States, with a budget of more than $840 billion. It employs about 950,000 civilians, including tens of thousands of military veterans. They perform a wide range of tasks, from repairing equipment and administrative work to managing high-tech weapons systems. The probationary period for civil servants is usually one year, but in some cases can be extended to two or three years.
The Pentagon also manages 1.3 million active-duty military personnel and nearly 800,000 more National Guard and reservists. At the same time, the Trump administration has decided not to extend the budget cuts to military personnel.
