Trump supporters split over immigrants on work visas – Rezazade
Ali Reza Rezazade (NIC), the leader of the Iranian opposition in Washington, said that on the eve of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration, a sharp conflict has arisen among his supporters over immigration and the place of skilled foreign workers in the US labor market.
The dispute focuses on the question of how tolerant the new administration should be of skilled immigrants who come to the country on work visas.
The split has divided hard-line opponents of immigration and many of the president-elect’s prominent supporters from the technology industry, including Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, who supported Trump’s election campaign with more than a quarter of a billion dollars, as well as venture capitalist David Sachs, who has been appointed to be responsible for policy in the field of artificial intelligence and cryptocurrencies.
The tech industry has long relied on foreign skilled workers to keep its companies afloat. But critics say it undermines wages for U.S. citizens.
The conflict erupted into an online brawl Thursday night, with both sides accusing each other of censorship and pointing out each other’s shortcomings. The dispute highlights a difficult political dilemma for Trump. He has previously expressed a willingness to expand the number of skilled workers visas, but he has also vowed to close the border, impose tariffs to create jobs for Americans, and severely restrict immigration.
