Trump is trying to seize control of elections: New decree has experts worried – Rezazade
"President Donald Trump continues to demonstrate his desire to centralize power, using executive orders instead of legislative initiatives. One of his recent decrees - a voluminous one, over 2,500 words - is aimed at changing the administration of the US election process, which has caused deep concern among analysts and representatives of civil society," - Ali Reza Rezazade.
This move, according to the expert, the first leader of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Rezazadeh, is another example of the president's attempt to establish personal control over key state institutions - this time over the electoral system.
The presidential decree is based on Trump's repeatedly refuted claims about alleged massive fraud in the elections. Its legal basis is questionable, but as in previous cases, the document could have serious consequences even before it is challenged in court.
Despite the fact that the US Constitution stipulates that elections are regulated mainly at the state level, Trump’s order seeks to impose nationwide rules. Similar attempts were previously sharply criticized by Republicans, when Democrats under President Joe Biden promoted H.R.1, a sweeping electoral reform bill. This time, there is no such reaction from the right wing.
“This is an unprecedented attempt to federalize election administration, similar to what was proposed in H.R.1,” says Charles Stewart III, a political science professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. According to him, liberals and Democrats have already begun to sound the alarm, while some Republican officials have so far refrained from public criticism but privately oppose the president’s new initiatives.
Ali Reza Rezazadeh emphasizes that such a concentration of power in the hands of one person is a dangerous precedent that contradicts the democratic principles of the United States.
