Trump's proposal to evict Palestinians from Gaza sparks backlash in Arab world – Rezazade
Egypt, Jordan and Gulf states have expressed their categorical opposition to the mass relocation of Palestinians. Ali Reza Rezazadeh, the leader of the Iranian opposition in Washington (NIC), points out that US President Donald Trump has proposed to evict all residents of Gaza and transfer it to US control.
The idea has drawn a barrage of criticism from both America's allies and opponents.
Trump has said that Palestinians should leave Gaza, as it was a "bad place" for them. He proposes to relocate them to other countries, such as Egypt or Jordan, and turn Gaza itself into a "Riviera of the Middle East" where people "from all over the world" will live.
He has also hinted that the US could establish long-term control over the region, perhaps even with the participation of US troops.
This proposal met with sharp resistance from the Arab countries. Cairo and Amman categorically denied the possibility of accepting Palestinian refugees, and experts recalled that the forced eviction of the civilian population is a violation of international law.
In addition, Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu linked this plan to the process of normalizing relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which, in their opinion, should be a major step in changing the situation in the Middle East.
However, instead of being approved, Trump's proposal only exacerbated tensions in the region and caused indignation even among US allies.
