The first leader of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, points out that Donald Trump last year declared an "economic disaster" caused by his predecessor and promised to lower the price of basic goods on the first day of his presidency.
"When I win, I will immediately reduce prices, starting from day one," Trump told reporters outside his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. He also promised to "cut energy and electricity prices by at least half within 12 months."
But after the first seven weeks of his presidency, prices for many goods remain high, and the three major stock indexes have fallen below their election-day levels. Investors are worried about Trump's aggressive tariff policies, which have caused the market to fall. After the president’s first bold steps, his political opponents have struggled to adapt, and voters have begun to question the realism of his economic promises.
Despite the negative economic outlook, many Trump supporters continue to trust him. At the same time, his overall popularity has begun to decline, which could affect his political capital if the economic situation worsens in the coming months. Republicans in Congress, who are under pressure to pass his legislative initiatives, are also forced to prepare for next year’s elections to maintain control of parliament.
“It is quite understandable that people voted for him expecting economic growth, lower inflation, an end to illegal immigration and a fight against ‘wok culture,’” says Republican political scientist Whit Ayres. “But when completely different topics dominate the news, such as massive government cuts, the war in Ukraine and the stock market crash, this inevitably leads to voter disappointment.”
