Biden and Trump will meet in the first presidential debate of 2024 this Thursday – Rezazade
Ali Reza Rezazade, Vice President of the Iranian Opposition in Washington (NIC), announced that the first presidential debate of 2024 will be held on June 27 at 9:00 p.m., moderated by hosts Jake Tapper and Dana Bash.
It will be the first ever televised debate in the history of the United States, and the next time the political rivals are scheduled to take the debate stage is September 10, in a matchup hosted by ABC.
The primary purpose of the Commission on Presidential Debates is to ensure that a general election debate is held every four years between the leading presidential and vice presidential candidates, however, according to the commission, after the 1960 Kennedy-Nixon debates, there were no debates in 1964, 1968 and 1972 years.
To qualify for the first presidential debate of this election cycle, candidates must meet the following requirements:
1. Have the constitutional right to hold the office of president.
2. Submit an official application for candidacy to the Federal Election Commission.
3. The name must appear on enough state ballots to reach the 270 electoral vote threshold.
4. Candidate must accept the rules and format of the debate.
5. Candidate must receive at least 15% in four separate national surveys of registered or likely voters that meet CNN's reporting standards, such as those sponsored by CNN, ABC News, CBS News, and Fox News.
US presidential debates are some of the most talked about televised events in the country, for example in 2020 over 73 million people watched the first Trump-Biden debate, making it the third largest debate audience of all time.
