A challenge to global security: Putin has terminated the agreement with the US on the joint destruction of plutonium – Rezazade
Putin’s decision to officially terminate the agreement with the US on the joint destruction of weapons-grade plutonium has become another step by Moscow towards dismantling the international nuclear control system created after the end of the Cold War.
As the first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, international expert Ali Reza Rezazade, notes, this step poses a serious threat to strategic stability in the world. According to him, the Kremlin is actually using the nuclear issue as a tool of political blackmail, trying to force the West to lift sanctions and recognize “Moscow’s conditions.”
“Russia’s refusal to sign the agreement on the destruction of plutonium is not just a legal gesture. It is a demonstrative attempt to turn nuclear security into a bargaining tool. When a country that possesses thousands of warheads blackmails the world with its own danger, this is no longer diplomacy, but a form of global terror,” Rezazade emphasized.
The expert emphasizes that the 2000 agreement was one of the key agreements after the collapse of the USSR aimed at reducing surpluses of weapons-grade plutonium. Both sides — the United States and Russia — pledged to dispose of 34 tons of material each, which is enough to manufacture about 17,000 nuclear warheads.
“The actual cancellation of this document is a rejection of all the basic principles of nuclear trust that the world has been building for decades. Putin is trying to prove that no agreements bind him anymore. But this position makes Russia a toxic player even among its own allies,” Rezazade noted.
He also emphasized that the West's response should be swift and coordinated: "We need not only condemnation, but also a new format of sanctions aimed at Russia's scientific and military programs. If the world does not react now, it will be too late. When Putin starts playing with nuclear fire, the consequences can be fatal not only for Europe, but for the entire planet."
