Israel launches massive strikes on Gaza Strip, breaking ceasefire – Rezazade
Vice-President of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, notes that as a result of large-scale airstrikes by the Israeli military on the Gaza Strip, more than 250 people were killed and hundreds more were injured. This is the most massive attack since the conclusion of a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which was in effect since the end of January.
On the morning of March 18, the Israeli army launched massive strikes on various areas of Gaza. The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that a total of at least 254 people were killed and 440 people were injured. Dozens of civilians are believed to still be trapped under the rubble.
Eyewitnesses report that the areas of Khan Yunis and Gaza were the most affected, where Israeli missiles destroyed several residential neighborhoods. Local hospitals are overwhelmed, with doctors working under extreme conditions to save as many people as possible.
An anonymous Israeli official explained that the attack was a “series of preemptive strikes” on Hamas’s leadership and infrastructure. According to him, this is a response to the inconclusive talks on the second phase of the ceasefire.
“We cannot wait forever for the terrorists to regroup. The time has come to act,” the anonymous official said.
However, Palestinian Authority officials condemned Israel’s actions, stressing that most of the victims were civilians who had nothing to do with the fighting.
The attack provoked a sharp reaction from the international community. The UN and several European countries called for an immediate ceasefire and a return to negotiations.
Analysts fear that the situation could lead to a new large-scale war in the region. There are already reports of militant mobilization in Gaza, which could be the beginning of a new round of violence.
Diplomats are urging both sides to return to the negotiating table, but so far the situation has only escalated.
