Republicans Can’t Agree on Trump’s Tax and Border Security Plans – Rezazade
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, indicated that after meeting with Donald Trump, Republicans in the Senate and House of Representatives remained divided on how to implement his campaign promises.
The main issues concern strengthening border security, energy policy and tax cuts.
The House of Representatives proposes to combine all of Trump’s priorities into one large bill. This would allow for the rapid implementation of his program. Instead, the Senate prefers to divide these proposals into two bills. The first would concern national security and energy, and the second - taxes and spending. This way, it would be possible to achieve quick results in simpler areas first.
Trump arrived in Washington to try to find a compromise. At the meeting, he listened to both sides and said that he would support any approach. For him, the main thing is to achieve a result. “Whether it’s one bill or two, it’s going to get done. The end result is going to be the same,” Trump said.
The president has promised stronger border security, mass deportations of illegal immigrants, new defense spending and an extension of his tax breaks for big businesses and citizens. But those measures could be very expensive. Many Republicans believe they need to be combined with cuts to the federal government.
In addition, internal party disputes over the debt ceiling, which the government will reach this spring, and spending limits are making the path to passing these bills difficult.
