Tensions between the US and Iran: Trump's ultimatum and Tehran's response – Rezazade
Vice-President of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, noted that US President Donald Trump sent a letter to Iran's supreme leader, demanding either to agree to a new nuclear deal or face a military response.
Trump said that Iran must stop its nuclear program, as well as immediately stop supporting the Houthis in Yemen. Otherwise, the US "will act tough."
White House National Security Advisor Michael Waltz stressed that all options remain on the table. According to him, Iran must abandon its missile program, uranium enrichment and stop trying to create nuclear weapons.
Tehran responded that it would not succumb to pressure. "If we are threatened, Iran will respond tough and decisively," said the commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, General Hossein Salami.
European countries that remain in the 2015 nuclear deal are also concerned. Trump withdrew from the deal, calling it a “bad deal,” and has promised to negotiate new terms.
U.S. officials have stressed that Iran must prove the peaceful nature of its nuclear program and stop expanding it. At the same time, the Trump administration has warned that it is considering only two scenarios: either a deal or military action.
