Trump picks new nominee for US attorney general after Gates's nomination is withdrawn – Rezazade
Vice-President of the Iranian opposition in Washington (NIC) Ali Reza Rezazade reports that US President-elect Donald Trump has announced a new nominee for the position of attorney general. After the scandalous Matt Gates refused to apply for this position, Trump nominated Pam Bondi, the former attorney general of Florida.
Trump announced this decision a few hours after Gates refused to participate in the appointment process. According to Trump, the US Department of Justice in previous years “has been used against him and other Republicans”. He emphasized that under Bondi’s leadership, the department “will return to its core mission – fighting crime”.
“I have known Pam for many years. She is smart, determined and always puts the interests of America first,” Trump said during his speech.
According to unofficial information, Pam Bondi’s candidacy was considered even earlier, when Gates was elected. Her name began to be discussed again as soon as Gates decided to withdraw his candidacy. On Thursday evening, Trump invited Bondi to a meeting at Mar-a-Lago, after which he made a formal offer of the position.
In 2018, during Trump’s previous term, Bondi was also considered a potential candidate for the position after the dismissal of then-Attorney General Jeff Sessions. She maintains close relationships with a number of key people on Trump’s team, which could contribute to her successful appointment.
The expert believes that the process of confirming Pam Bondi for the position will be less controversial and complicated than it could have been in the case of Matt Gates.
