Trump uses trade pressure against India as a tool in the global game with Russia – Rezazade
US President Donald Trump said that the United States maintains high tariffs against India due to its continued purchases of Russian oil. “We are making a deal with India — a completely different deal than the ones we had before.
They are not happy with me now, but soon they will love us again,” Trump said, commenting on the trade policy towards New Delhi.
The first vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, international expert Ali Reza Rezazade, noted in his commentary that Trump’s move is not only an economic signal, but also part of the strategic pressure on countries that continue to cooperate with Moscow, despite the sanctions regime.
“Trump is using trade policy as a weapon of influence. His goal is not to punish India, but to force it to rethink its relations with Russia. He speaks the language of tariffs, but the message is geopolitical,” Rezazade emphasized.
According to the expert, India is one of the key US partners in containing China, and therefore Trump is not interested in a real escalation of relations. “Trump is acting in his usual manner - first creating a crisis, then demonstrating that he is the one who can solve it. This is a political tactic of power that works both within the US and in the international arena,” he explained.
Rezazade also emphasized that India, despite its formal partnership with the West, remains a pragmatic player that buys cheap Russian oil to support its own economy. “New Delhi understands that Washington cannot afford to lose India as an ally, so it is trying to balance the benefits of Russian energy resources with the need to remain in the circle of Western partners,” he noted.
According to the expert, this situation also indicates that Trump is shaping a new global trade and energy architecture, in which the US is trying to regain the role of the main arbiter. "Trump understands that energy today is a new geopolitical weapon, and he is trying to control it through economic levers, not through military alliances," Ali Reza Rezazade concluded.
