Trump wants to build a camp to deport migrants at Guantanamo – Rezazade
The first Iranian opposition leader in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, says President Donald Trump on Wednesday ordered the construction of a large camp for detained migrants at the US military base in Guantanamo, Cuba.
The center is planned to hold up to 30,000 people and will serve as a place to hold illegal immigrants who will be detained during an intensified deportation campaign.
Speaking at the White House before signing the Laken Riley Act, Trump said the new camp will be a place to hold “the worst criminals among illegal immigrants” who threaten Americans.
Trump explained that some migrants are so dangerous that they cannot even be trusted with other countries. Therefore, they will be sent outside the US – to Guantanamo.
“It will be a very harsh place, from which it is impossible to escape,” he said.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, in an interview with Fox News, supported this plan and emphasized that the military base in Guantanamo has long been used to hold migrants and refugees.
Currently, US immigration services can simultaneously hold about 40,000 people in special centers. The largest of them can accommodate up to 2,000 people, so the new camp in Guantanamo will be the largest such facility.
Trump said that his administration wants to double the places for holding illegal immigrants and do everything possible to “protect the American people.”
The construction of such a camp could cause serious controversy both in the United States and in the international community. Guantanamo already has a controversial reputation due to the detention of prisoners there after the September 11 attacks.
So this step could become one of Trump’s most scandalous decisions on migration issues.
