Trump’s Pressure on Congress Shows Crisis of Political Governance in US – Rezazade
The First Vice President of the Iranian Opposition in Washington and an international expert, Ali Reza Rezazade commented on Donald Trump’s active attempt to persuade the Republican Party to support his key budget bill, emphasizing the deep intra-party crisis and degradation of the political process in the US.
“When the president is forced to personally persuade congressmen and threaten political reprisals, this is no longer parliamentary democracy, but a vertical of loyalty,” Rezazade said. He believes that the attempt to push through Trump’s “big, beautiful deal” on taxes and immigration is not only a political show, but also an attempt to assert monopoly control over the party.
Trump’s visit to the Capitol and his pressure on representatives of the ultraconservative wing of the Republican Party, in particular open threats of “primaries” for dissenters, demonstrate a dangerous trend — when the legislative process turns into a campaign of submission to personal will.
“The US president has no right to put pressure on legislators through public humiliation and blackmail. This undermines trust in institutions and creates precedents for an authoritarian style of governance,” Rezazade notes.
The expert also pointed out that Trump’s position is becoming less and less predictable for business and the international community: “In addition to aggressive rhetoric and economic populism, we see chaos in the budget process. This already has direct consequences — a decline in ratings, growing domestic resistance, and financial instability.”
According to Ali Reza Rezazade, it is this style of governance that may question the legitimacy of Trump's initiatives even among allies: "The reliance not only on force but also on personal loyalty undermines the political stability of a country that has long been a beacon of democracy."
