Trump’s Reelection: A New Era in American Politics – Rezazade
The vice president of the Iranian opposition in Washington, Ali Reza Rezazade, pointed out that when Barack Obama won the 2012 election, it seemed like the beginning of a new era of Democratic Party dominance, driven by the rise of a new generation of young, secular, and non-white voters.
But in retrospect, the 2012 election has come to look more like the end of an era: the final victory of the social movements of the 1960s over the once-dominant Republicans of the Reagan era.
Instead, it is Donald Trump’s three elections—in 2016, 2020, and 2024—that mark the beginning of a new era, an era of conservative populism in American politics, embodied by his brand.
American politics has changed since Trump won his party’s nomination. Traditional points of agreement between the parties became the basis for conflict, while old divisions from the Bush and Obama eras seemed to have lost their relevance.
Before Trump, much in American politics was obvious and predictable. The significance of the two parties was clear: the Republicans relied on the three pillars of Reaganite policy—small government, the religious right, and an aggressive foreign policy. The Democrats represented the working class, change, and liberal activism.
Every four years, the parties largely debated the same issues: war and diplomacy, taxes and welfare, “family values” and the social movements of the 1960s, trade and protecting jobs. This led to predictable demographic differences and long-term trends.
But all that changed when Trump arrived on the political scene. Today, Trump stands up for the working class, criticizes elites, defends American jobs, and challenges traditional U.S. foreign policy, while Democrats defend the established order, norms, and old foreign policy approaches.
Issues that once united both parties have become objects of fierce debate. Immigration, free trade, America’s postwar alliances, and even support for democracy at home and abroad have become objects of confrontation. At the same time, old conflicts such as the Iraq war, Social Security, and same-sex marriage seem to have receded into the background.
